Materials handling system supplier SSI Schaefer has announced its sponsorship of the Young Professional of the Year Award for the fourth consecutive year at the 2012 Mercury Awards.

SSI Schaefer managing director Alan Clark said seeing inspirational young people like Daniel Castle, principal supply chain analyst, BlueScope Steel, take out the 2011 award indicates the future of the materials handling and supply chain industry is in good hands.

“Through his role Daniel was asked to develop and implement a Cost-to-Serve tool for BlueScope Steel’s Australian based sales. This tool is viewed as a critical enabler in improving margins for BlueScope Steel in a mature domestic market,” Clark said.

Castle also introduced another key business initiative around international freight optimisation. The initiative “has been delivered by configuring the company’s transport management system to optimise freight in containers in the same manner as which the system optimises domestic road and rail movements,” Clark explained.

“Consequently, Daniel has allowed BlueScope to improve container utilisation for the movement of international freight by about 10 per cent,” he added.

“Daniel’s development and implementation of a Cost-to-Serve tool was a critical ability for BlueScope Steel. Daniel was able to conduct a complex but essential piece of analysis that has delivered real, lasting commercial benefit,” Clark said.

“The Young Professional of the Year Award recognises young people that have excelled in the provision of services, development of strategy and supply chain management and SSI Schaefer is proud to be associated with an award that recognises the future leaders of our industry,” he said.
