Freight Week celebrates its 20th year

The Victorian Transport Association and the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce have presented Freight Week every two years for the past 20 years.

In these years Freight Week has showcased and celebrated the freight logistics sector to the industry with an aim to highlight the issues, activities, technology and developments, in fact every facet concerning freight in Victoria.

2009 is a challenging year, with economic pressures unseen for many years. The role of Freight Week 2009 is to deliver valuable recommendations and solutions for businesses.

Organisations that understand and meet the challenges in the economy and specific to the industry will be better positioned to thrive in the future.

“Freight Week is a freight industry owned and sponsored event with a ticket price around a tenth of commercial conferences, yet its value in networking and professional content is immense," says Victorian Transport Association (VTA) CEO Philip Lovel.

"The themes for 2009 concern the top five issues that drive our businesses and strategies: people and industrial relations, technology as the next frontier for productivity improvement, environmental issues, safety in our workplace and freight strategy.”

Highlights of Freight Week 2009 Freight People:

Monday September 7th

The transport logistics industry is a “people” industry, therefore attracting, training and retaining strategies are key to the workforce of the future.

Keynote speakers include: Hon. Jacinta Allan, Minister for Skills and Workforce Participation and David Galbally QC on industrial relations. Freight Technology:

Tuesday September 8th

Technology promises to deliver better safety, environmental and productivity outcomes. Freight Week will provide hands on and interactive access to these technologies.

Keynote speaker: Hon. Martin Pakula, MLC, Minister for Industry and Trade Industrial Relations on Australian innovation. Freight Port Day: Tuesday September 8th The Port of Melbourne is Australia’s premier port.

Key experts from the Port of Melbourne and industry will deliver their views and forecasts, but most importantly the actions needed to keep Melbourne’s port the most vital in the country.

Freight Environment Day:

Wednesday September 9th

This day will be the launch of the “Smart Way” in Australia in partnership with the EPA Victoria. This program gas changed the face of freight in the US and today will explore what it can do in Australia.

Keynote speaker: Mick Bourke, Chairman, EPA Victoria. Freight Safety Day: Thursday September 10th Safety is paramount in the freight logistics industry.

The TWU “Safe Rates” campaign and The Guide to Safe Workplace Driving will be showcased.

Keynote speakers include: Ken Lay, Deputy Police Commissioner, Victoria Police and Tony Sheldon, National Secretary, Transports Workers Union. Freight Agenda Day:

Friday September 11th

Freight Agenda will focus on the Victorian Government’s transport and freight strategies, drawing together the many themes from the week with an overlay of the Government’s vision and proposed actions and initiatives.

Key note speakers include: Tim Pallas, Minister for Roads and Transport, Terry Garwood, Executive Director, Department of Transport and Nick Dimopoulos, National Transport Commission Freight Debates.

Freight Week 2009 has received outstanding support from the Victorian Government and its agencies including the Department of Transport, VicRoads, Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development, and the EPA Victoria. Freight Week is a must attend event for all in this industry so vital to Victoria’s future.
