Demag Cranes has delivered its first mobile harbour cranes to Papua New Guinea.
Once all four cranes are delivered to two of the island state’s main cargo ports, the Port of Lae and Port Moresby Port, they will be used to handle containers, general cargo and bulk materials.
Two of the Demag cranes have already been delivered this year, after being fitted with motor grabs of 24 cubic metres for their current role in unloading imported grain and containers. The remainder, which will be fitted with spreaders, are expected to arrive early next year.
In a statement, Demag Cranes said the new purchase for PNG Ports Corporation will expand the company’s presence in the Indo-Australian region. The new equipment will also speed the development of Papua New Guinea’s maritime trade and domestic industries.
Currently, the ports handle the majority of food imports for Papua New Guinea, along with the largest share of the country’s raw material exports, according to Cranes Today.
PNG Ports Corporation chief executive, Brian Riches, said the technology will help the company fulfil and expand its role as the main regional hub for maritime cargo handling and raw materials export.
