The Masters of Science in Logistics Program addresses the changing and increasingly important role of logistics in business; logistics performance measures and benchmarking procedures; world-class processes for customer service and order processing, inventory planning and management, supply chain integration, transportation, distribution and warehousing; logistics information systems architectures and implementation strategies; and logistics organisation design alternatives. The academic program is designed to give the students the analytical skills and intellectual framework they will need to succeed in designing and implementing a global logistics strategy.

High Commendation: TDT Victoria
TDT Victoria developed a Cadetship in Logistics program that is designed to develop and train future managers for the Transport and Logistics (T&L) industry. It is a collaborative partnership between TDT Victoria as the Industry Training Advisory Board for the transport sector, Kangan Institute of TAFE, Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE and employers of the Cadets. It promotes a style of learning that values workplace learning and work experience as fundamentally linked to effective skill development.

Storage & Handling of Materials Award - recognises the significant achievements in the techniques and technology of materials storage and handling at any stage of the supply chain. Technology covers equipment and design techniques, including facilities design, and associated information and control systems. The trophy was first awarded in 1980 and is dedicated to Dexion’s Founder, Demetrius Comino, OBE.

Winner: Nestlé Australia Limited

Completed orders are conveyed through the integrated layer picking system being check-weighed, stretch-wrapped and labelled on the way, until they exit ready for collection and transport to despatch by forklift. WCRAQ was the coordinating industry body, supported by its members, who worked with the Brisbane City Council to facilitate the safe collection, transport and disposal of more than 400,000 tonnes of flood-related wastes and also provided specialist industry advice to other affected Councils across the state. Across Brisbane, WCRAQ was responsible for all the back end clean-up and disposal operations of all the flood-related wastes including all the commercial and industrial and other wastes generated - getting Brisbane back in business.

High Commendation: Schenker Australia
Schenker Australia has implemented a strong focus towards ‘green’ logistics and recently introduced their Eco Solutions program; carbon dioxide-reduced logistics and freight services.

Information Management Award – to recognise the business that has made the most significant achievement in the application of information technology within its Supply Chain. The trophy was first awarded in 1994 and is dedicated to the late Len Smith, FAIMM.

Winner: The Just Group
With around a thousand stores in Australia and New Zealand, The Just Group’s twice-yearly stocktake has traditionally been a labour-intensive and costly operation, with stores remaining closed on the day of stocktaking until the process is completed. They wanted to simplify, speed and reduce the cost and impact of the stocktake process on sales. The Just Group developed and implemented a world-first Bluetooth-enabled stocktaking solution for retail stores; RapidStocktake. The solution is now being rolled out across 500 stores in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania, with the remainder of their stores to be rolled out later in the year in time for the next stocktake period.

Nestlé evaluated a range of technology and software options to eliminate the OH&S risks associated with manually building layers, and also increase the efficiency of single case pick operations. Productivity and system efficiency are optimised by FreePick Maximiser software.

Winner: Rick Ralph
The judges said: “Nothing demonstrated the united force and pivotal importance of WCRAQ more than its operations during the cleanup of the 2011 Queensland floods. Rick acted as a liaison to facilitate the safe collection, transport and disposal operations of more than 750 separate requests of removing and disposing of hazardous and regulated wastes, the safe disposal of 25,000 dead chickens, and of moving more than 8,000 tonnes of market waste in just 48 hours to get the markets reopened. The generosity of Rick’s time and specialist advice was instrumental to helping Brisbane get back to business after the 2011 Floods.”

High Commendation: Allan Jones
According to AIP, Jones plays an active role in the organisations logistics domain by providing assistance and mentoring to other logisticians on education and career paths. As a public transport enthusiast, Amy is respected by the regional operators she manages as a fair, objective and conscientious officer.”

High Commendation: Karan Sikand
The judges said: “Karan’s biggest success story within the Schweppes Supply Chain was his development and roll out of an execution planning model and the transformation of the supply chain to accommodate greater responsiveness and agility. He developed a mathematically derived safety stock/re-order point model based upon the standard deviation of lead time and demand. Today the model is being implemented on a national basis and has been a key driver in the increase in customer service, while driving down days of cover. He is also actively involved in promoting the development of the industry and its talented future leaders, acting as a committee member of the Future Leaders Group in Victoria.”
